Update: Drained the transmission, results don't look good.

Finally had a chance to track down the 12mm hex key I need to remove the transmission drain plug.  With the help of a 3 foot extension bar, I was barely able to remove the plug.   Whoever was in there last seriously overtightened it.

The fluid that came out looked pretty ominous - sludgy and dark gray.   Stuck to the plug magnet were plenty of find metal dust and 5-10 metal thin metal shavings.    No thick metal chunks though, for what it's worth.    

I'm wondering if that points to a terminal failure for the gearbox, or something else?

Practically, that means, do I push forward with removing the engine and gearbox or do I go further to investigate the problem.
