As far as I know, the matching was related to the way they are (or used to be) made. I heard the backings were cut from some sort of tube of fabric (think making rubber bands out of an old inner tube by slicing it up like a sausage might be sliced into pepperoni for a pizza) and a matched pair consisted of two belts that were sequential slices or at least from the same tube.
That said, just so you know a lot of belts out there are not the exact original spec. The originals were 10x971. For a while all anybody (and I mean anybody) had listed for classic 900 cars was 10x990, which were too long/wore out quickly, but easier to install. I use a 9000 alternator, so I needed stock belts to keep the huge thing clear of the shock tower. I don't think the extra 4mm matter much, but 971 wasn't available at that time. The 10x975 is also spec'd for a BMW E21 320i '79-'83. Can probably get them cheaper/another brand from Rock Auto or Napa or something, and especially if you're having trouble with Contis you might find other brands better. I always used lawn equipment belts for the alternator on the farm tractor because I feel like they are more durable and meant for sitting for long periods. They are sold in inches. Probably 38 or 38 1/2 would work. I don't think they come in 1/4" increments.
I also don't drive my car much, and the 10x975 Contis have lasted years, but I live in New Endland, where it is always overcast and humid and raining and so rubber products last forever anyway.
