My voltage regulator went out too so I ended up following this thread. My car (turbo) did the dim dash lights and slow windshield wipers routine and died on the road. Fortunately I got a jump from a helpful motorist and barely made it the mile to my place. The battery was new so I suspected the voltage regulator.
This process seemed easier than other ideas. I wanted to avoid taking off the bolts for the oil filter housing.
Anyway, the tip to move the coolant reservoir out of the way indeed created a lot of space to work with. There was even more space after removing the power cord to the alternator. The voltage regulator screw farthest from the engine was easily removed with a short screwdriver. The other voltage regulator screw closest to the engine was a bit tougher. The old fashioned offset screwdriver didn’t fit as the oil filter housing got in the way. I ended up using needle nose vice grip pliars to get it loose ( and some cursing) then fingers. Reassembly was easier. I needed to jump start the car three times before the battery got charged up enough so the car would keep running. I was a little worried that the alternator was toast. But things worked out.
The old voltage regular brushes were worn and grooved though not as worn and stubby as the one I replaced about 6-7 years ago. So this alternator is probably good for another 15k miles only.
As far as time involved this took a couple of hours.
