Valve Guide Seals or Turbo Leak? -> 1985 900 SPG -> Well.... Posted by Justin VanAbrahams [Email] (#32) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Justin VanAbrahams) on Wed, 6 Feb 2019 14:46:20 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
To follow up on the thread from last week...
I got my first drive on the SPG following the head bolt retorque, and the car runs INFINITELY better. It wasn't a problem before - I mean, it got smog referee inspected and passed a smog test - but engine responsiveness is dramatically improved post retorque. I truly believe I was actually running with a functional head gasket leak. So weird.
The oil leak from the corner of the head is improved, but still present. It's *possible* the leak is from the rear cover, but I'm pretty sure it's the head.
The oil burning seems to have been improved, if not essentially eliminated. I think I caught a slight whiff, but I'm pretty sure it was from the external leak up front, and not the overpowering smell of oil into the exhaust.
All this leaves me with a conundrum: I still wanna replace this powertrain with a lower mileage unit I have in the garage, largely because the transmission in the car is physically damaged externally and that annoys me. I was under the impression that maybe the bottom end wasn't too healthy on this motor as well, and a full replacement seemed like the easy button. Now I'm not so sure, and considering maybe just replacing the head gasket. I'm not losing fluids, I don't have a warped head. I don't have any stuck or damaged fasteners. I have a brand new T5 wiring harness. I think I could execute a head gasket swap in a few hours one afternoon for the cost of a head gasket set and a turbo drain tube gasket. Maybe it's worth it to try?
