I agree, Eeuro is the place to get parts most of the time.
I was kind of chuckling at the "bitter winter conditions" of 38F :-P... We're around -6F today, but it is at least getting warmer and starting to feel like spring. You are absolutely right though that cold weather tests the heating system as much as hot summer days. I find summer is the time for overheating (radiators struggle more), but I've had 3 thermostats fail in winter in the 9-5's, and it seems more common to get coolant leaks in the winter also. All that expansion and contraction is hard on anything that needs to seal tight.
I would definitely try to get a original tank if possible
