Tushy,
Thank you for posting at TSN!
The SAAB 900 Turbo models employed the same 215MM/8.5" clutch diameter up to 1989. In 1990, all 900 turbocharged applications were updated with the 228MM/9" diameter clutch although the combination was over 1 lb. heavier than the earlier design. Your 1989 900T would be a good candidate for later era flywheel and clutch installation if your current clutch has been prone to slippage or requiring more frequent replacements. With a standard organic clutch design(SACHS), use of the larger diameter clutch and flywheel would provide better hold to additional engine horsepower while requiring less replacements.
Most of our 900 performance enthusiasts have opted to lighten the rotating flywheel mass by means of an aluminum flywheel which would reduce the flywheel wt. by up to 50%. Most also opt to install the 215MM clutch design due to the lower rotating mass. In these cases, a performance clutch lining may be employed to provide better holding capabilities.
Thanks again for your posting, and we are now open Saturdays until 6PM EST!
Sincerely,
Gary K. at SWEDISH DYNAMICS, INC.
