Yes, it is true -- I've had two 1989 cars, both turbos and they both had this one off pump setup. The actual pump is Bosch, but it isn't the large Bosch diameter like the 8 valve cars.

There is a very odd looking locking ring as previously mentioned. I can't recall any details on the O ring, but if you have an old one, a good hydraulic shop would be able to match it up with a fuel rated seal.
