Very interesting about the Redline.
As you may know the early two digit Saabs are known for their transmission issues, particularly the freewheel. Jack Lawrence, IMHO, is THE transmission guru for the old ones. He rebuilt the engine in one of my Sonetts to have markedly increased HP and rebuilt the transmission as well, and I've had no problems with either.
So in talking to Jack, he's a bit hesitant with Redline MTL. He can't confirm increased wear, but he claims he's seen slightly increased corrosion levels in gearboxs using Redline that come to him for rebuild. He's a firm believer in Valvoline Synthetic and I've been using that more recently in my old ones.
So maybe I'll go with the Honda MTF.
Which makes me think of another question... the old Saab freewheels get a little sticky and one trick is to drain out the old oil, refill with ATF and drive gently for 10 miles or so. Drain that out and refill with gear lube of choice. The idea is that ATF will flush out metal filings and other gunk- I can vouch that it's freed up a freewheel or two for me.
So do you 900 guys ever do a flush such as this?
thanks,
