Thanks for the encouragement to have a go at this! Like you said it was a bit of a puzzle but the wear marks made it easy to figure out. The pin track between the 2 plastic parts and the starter return spring seemed odd at first but easy, once you take a minute to think about it.
Annoyingly there was nothing really worn or sticking in there so some silicone grease on the spring and contact cleaner/lubricant and put it back together.
Still very stiff in the start position. Looking at the gears in the assembly I am suspecting some abuse/wear so going to try one of the reverse lockout repair kits that seem to be quite available still. The angled gear mesh between the switch and the lock cylinder at the end of range to start seems slightly off.
