These make noise when on the gas, then noise ceases when one lifts up on gas pedal and coasts in gear. Tends to be louder in 4th and 5th gears. If car has a 3-speed automatic transmission, probably not a pinion bearing failure, unless the differential gear lube (separate from red ATF) has run dry.
