Thanks for the hints. I will check both tonight - but weird of all things is that the issue with the gas smell seems to have disappeared with the summer weather. Still hard starting - need to basically pump the gas pedal to get it to start, now hot or cold. Once running it runs fine. Is there a fuel line check valve that could have failed and is draining the lines?
I've had so many 900's over the years I've forgotten too much. Except that press-fit water pump on the 99 engine fitted to my first-production 900. That thing was a testament to man's blind faith.
