I bought a 1979 900 EMS new and drove it for 21 years until the rust got too bad to repair. I loved the car and hated to see it go. On the other hand it had its problems: the insulation would tend to flake off the wiring, it used ceramic fuses that would randomly quit conducting (if you are ambitious maybe you could splice in a newer style fuse box), rust was a constant companion in the Northeast (check the frame rails that the lower control arms attach to), the velour seats would delaminate and wear out (maybe substitute newer mid-80s velour seats that seemed to last forever), the headliner will need to be redone, and last but not least the B engine has a water pump that runs off a jack shaft in the engine. Is the water pump even available any more and is the tool available to pull the pump If it fails? The engine and manual transmission seemed to be very reliable. Watch the plastic fuel lines to the injectors as they get as fragile as glass with age. In the last two years I have seen two 1979 acacia green metallic 900 EMSs that we’re still going and made me nostalgic for my old car. My car also had electrical issues at times that made it seem haunted. I guess it mostly had to do with the ceramic fuses and poor insulation on the wiring. I got good at pulling over, jumping out of the car, opening the hood and twisting fuses until things started working again. The air conditioning worked well but was R-12, so would need to be converted, if that’s important to you.
