I installed some Recaro cheapie knock-offs about six years ago in my 87 900T because my Saab original seats were breaking apart.
The immediate reaction upon sitting inside the car in the new cheapies for the first time: "Wow, I'm so much lower."
There were a couple more inches above my head than the original seats. I'm about 6'1".
The seats also made the car feel a little more like a go-kart; I felt lower to the ground during rapid turns. And the seats really "gripped" me; the car was a lot of fun to drive with those seats.
Initially after purchase I was scared they were too stiff (when sitting on them in the driveway) but the cushioning was perfect for normal commute lengths. I did not go on many long drives in that car with those seats and would be curious to see how I would have felt after six hours of driving.
The downside? They were difficult to exit. You look more like you're clawing and tumbling forward when exiting the car compared to normal seats where you merely turn and spin to stand up outside the car.
I fabricated an adapter plate from a big sheet of aluminum where I bolted the plate to the car using the original holes and then bolted the seat tracks to the plate. It was pretty straightforward.
Another downside is the knock-offs weren't terribly well-built. The framing in the driver's side started failing last year and complicated getting stuff out of the back seat. I considered buying a name-brand equivalent but I don't feel like spending ~$1000 just for seats.
For sake of function, I'm trying some front seats from a 2007 Ford Focus (cruised a local soCal junkyard this past summer and these were the best option). Got 'em for $100 total and they seem pretty strongly built. I'm still fashioning the best way to attach them to another adapter plate but they're nowhere near as comfortable as the cheapie race seats.
