Check that crankshaft pulley isn't slipping Posted by walt [Email] (#2707) [Profile/Gallery] (more from walt) on Sun, 1 Dec 2019 06:41:51 In Reply to: Really weird startup noise - HELP!, Robert Hakalski i, Sun, 1 Dec 2019 05:34:51 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
One can slacken all the V-belts and try turning the pulleys (alternator, water pump, AC idler, and power steering) to see if any are making noise or are loose.
Sometimes the crankshaft pulley sheave (aka: harmonic balancer) starts to slip on its bonded rubber isolator. Pulley slippage may be related to temperature. When engine is cold, mark A/C outer pulley and one of inner pulley sheaves with correction fluid, white nail polish, or white grease pencil in a line. Start the engine then turn it off. If the white markings are no longer in a line, the balancer is failing and needs replacement. At the same time plan on doing crankshaft oil seal and oil pump O-ring, which likely caused balancer failure by oil leakage. If left unattended too long, balancer sheave will advance toward engine and chew away metal on oil pump housing and ignition crank sensor. There's also a loose 1/2-inch thick spacer collar underneath the crankshaft pulley bolt captive washer that needs to be replaced. If not replaced, the bolt bottoms, and loose pulley tears out woodruff key slot in crankshaft, which is very expensive to fix.
