Vern's instructions are correct. The test socket is an easy way to do things like bumping the starter (jumper pins 1,3) when doing maintenance on the engine. Whatever you do, though, be very careful not to confuse pins 3 & 5, if you accidentally jumper 1 & 5 you will damage/fry the ignition control unit or amplifier (depending on year/model). The schematics can be confusing, as the pin numbers are read from the bottom of the connector, so you have to keep that in mind when viewing from the top.
Probe the test connector with a DVM to make sure you have the correct pins (2 is ground, 6 is blank, etc.).
