Martin,
Thank you for posting at TSN!
The SAAB 900 B202 turbocharged, and NA engines are very similar in construction. SAAB differentiated compression ratios for both engines with use of different pistons, but the same cylinder head for either application. The NA engine employs a flat top piston making the 10:1 compression ratio desired whereas the turbocharged engine uses a recessed dish design which allows for 9:1 compression ratio.
We have several customers that prefer use of the turbocharged engine with 10:1 compression ratio as this provides better low end engine performance, but will almost always require premium fuel or 93 octane.
In your case, you could easily install the higher compression ratio NA engine or remove the NA cylinder head plus intake manifold, and integrate onto the original B202 turbocharged engine which keeps everything original SAAB, plus the 9:1 compression ratio.
Thanks again for posting at TSN, and we will be available until 6PM EST if there should be additional questions!
Sincerely,
Gary K. at SWEDISH DYNAMICS, INC.
