All C900 five speed transmissions are dimensionally identical and interchangeable. Internal gearing does vary and there are different front covers for different front motor mounts (hydraulic vs. solid), different side and rear covers and various dipsticks but your 1990 unit will drop right in. The early (discontinued in 1986) inner drivers have three raised rings. The newer version have only two raised rings. Of course the tripod bearing on the end of the axle must match the inner driver: small inner driver...small tripod, large inner driver...large tripod. The tripods are just slid onto the splined end of the axle shaft and secured with a snap ring so easily swapped from one axle to another. Your 1990 transmission should have the late inner drivers but your 1986 could have either and if it has the late, bigger inner drivers then the axles (should) have the corresponding bigger tripods. It's worth considering that your car may have already had its inner drivers and tripods updated, count the rings.
