I think you are in for a lot of poking around there. C900's with manual transmission do not have a neutral safety switch, they will (normally) start regardless of shift lever position.
By "won't start" do you mean cranks but won't run or will not even crank?
What you are describing is very odd and suggests an electrical problem related to a defect in the shift control box and the mechanism that operates the ignition switch but other possibilities exist.
First and reverse are the lowest gears in the unit. Could this be about a clutch, transmission or starter motor problem?
I think I would put a remote starter button on the starter motor and with an assistant pushing the clutch pedal and working the shift lever determine if it will start in all gears and neutral. If so then you have isolated the problem to the shift lever box without the need to open it up (which is involved). If it still won't start with a remote starter button, then you have some more investigation to do under the hood and it could be a combination of things.
