You do need to block the suspension but I would recommend using steel not wood (I've been a professional woodworker for decades). I've use Hard Maple blocks with success but anything softer than that can be crushed or split by the tremendous pressure of the coil spring. Almost anything steel will do the job, some guys use main bearing caps, spark plugs or big hex nuts. If you don't block the suspension before freeing the lower control arm you will have major problem to solve (compressing the coil spring is no fun on these cars).
