Key in run position so the shifter lock is disengaged and then "slap" the shifter out of reverse.

Both master and slave usually give a little notice before failing. Sudden failure is usually a major leak so check the rubber hose between slave and the brake res to make sure it's not rotted out or you should see the leak on the firewall either outside or under dash where the clutch pedal is, which means the master cylinder failed. Check the hose from master to slave at slave end to see if the rubber hose gave up. Search the board to find ideas on making the clutch tool.
