Could be a relatively simple matter. The rubber part of the "dogbone" style can have the rubber degraded by oil. it then becomes too pliable or rips and that can make it difficult to get into gear. The linkage adjustment is pretty simple and covered by Bentley. If the rubber part is degraded, you can replace that without readjusting the linkage, but it's a PITA (marginally less of a PITA than simply doing the adjustment, but just barely).
