Switchable lighting for controls

Good morning!
I have a US market '87 Turbo, which, after looking over the Bentley manual schematics, is the first year for instrument and control lighting that's connected directly to switched power at the fuse box. I really wish that this wasn't the case and would like to revert the lighting to the old way such that the lights are only on when the headlights are on. (Around my neck of the woods, you're supposed to turn on headlights in the rain/tunnels/construction zones anyway.) I feel like there's an argument to be made for conserving the use of the non-replaceable (ok, not easily replaceable) lights in the hvac buttons. However, the main reason that I bring this up is in the behavior of the illumination wire for the stereo. Like many of us, I have an aftermarket unit that expects 12v or nothing on that wire, whereas it's a dimming wire originally. The result is that I can hardly see the radio during the day.
It appears as though older model years have the fuse box between pin 58 of the headlight switch and the light rheostat, so it doesn't look like this would be particularly easy. I'm considering connecting just the radio illumination wire to pin 58 of the headlight switch, assuming that it behaves in the same way after '86. Has anyone tackled this?
Any thoughts are much appreciated. Thanks!
