Convertible top switch connector, finally connected

I pulled my convertible top switch out to solder in a new bulb. That part was easy. But trying to reconnect the switch, am I missing something?
The connector is too short to fish through the hole. It seems incredulous, but that's the situation.
So I formed 2 wire hooks with a closed loop end out of a hanger. They were kinda U shaped. The loop on the end was pretty tight, just needed some surface area. I fished these through the two square holes where the accordion rubber boot fits and somehow got them under the connector. Then I pulled up and fussed until the connector was at the hole and as high possible. I lined up the switch and got it started. Then, I don't know how I did this, but I pulled up on the hooks and pushed down on the switch and click, it went in.
I must be missing something, how are we supposed to do this? Does my car have the wire harness not extended all the way? It was tight under the center console where the key is and would not pull out further. I didn't remove the key console to take a look, but that's where I was headed next.
Other ideas I had included cutting a hole in the front of the console where it would be hidden by the accordion boot to put my finger through, or cutting the harness at the accordion and splicing in an extension...
