Roger, That low A08869 serial number is probably, but not certainly, consistent with a 1989/90 five speed. Looking inside can quickly confirm whether a unit is pre-1989, 1989/90 or 1991>. You won't confirm the exact variant because after about 1988 there's virtually no physical difference between an NA and a turbo unit. Cover plates aren't reliable as people tend to swap those around a lot. I personally don't consider the absence or presence of a transmission drain plug as being reliable for narrowing down the variant much (I've seen strange goings-on with those).
The clues that are visible behind the dipstick cover plate include the type of cluster gear thrust washer and whether the 1-2 shift fork is clipped to its shaft. Those clues are very reliable as those features can't really be swapped around from variant to variant.
A tabbed thrust washer means pre-'89, a non-tabbed washer and inner race is 1989>. If the 1-2 shift fork is clipped to its shaft it's 1991> and with no clip (or no slot for the clip as the clip is usually missing!) it's pre-1991. Those three items can place a unit into one of the three date range variants. Your suspected 1989/90 unit would have a non-tabbed thrust washer and no 1-2 fork clip.
