900 spare tire: A 3rd option Posted by blacksheep [Email] (#301) [Profile/Gallery] (more from blacksheep) on Fri, 24 Jun 2022 13:24:46 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Several years ago when I first bought Blacksheep ('93CE) one of the first modifications was to swap out the 15x5.5 SuperAero rims for a set of 9000 15x6 CrossSpoke rims. At the time I also intended to eventually graduate to 16x6.5 CrossSpokes. With that in mind I picked up a 16" 9000 spare from a '93 9000 Aero. I never found a set of 16x6.5's but I did replace my 15" spare with the 16".
After seeing Notnoel's post regarding new spares it occurred to me that mine was now 30 years old, with a couple of uses and between 200 to 300 miles on it. A quick search indicated nothing available in the original size (115/70R16). Unsure if the next size up would fit in the well I went to the Pick'n'Pull to find a 125/70R16 spare to see if it would fit. It did, albeit snugly. Thus reassured I went ahead and ordered a new Conti 125/70R16 spare. It arrive today, was mounted, and now sits snugly in place.
So, why bother? In previous 900s I was never comfortable with the unbalanced feeling the 15" spare had. The 16" feels more secure. It also has a higher load rating. While I understand these tires should not be run over 50 miles, out here in the West repair facilities may be less available and one may have to go significantly farther for a fix. I believe this option offers a functional compromise between the stock spare and carrying a full size tire.
As always, YMMV
