Half shaft tripod bearing question

Hi all, hoping for some advice from someone wiser than me. I recently went to rebuild the passenger side axle on my 89 SPG. Took the axle off, disassembled the CV joint, regressed it and put on a new boot, no problems there. Went to take off the tripod bearing and realize there was no c-Clip on the end. There was a retaining ring under the joint and the tripod bearing was only splined 3/4 of the way up. The splines were also smaller than the replacement GNK bearing that I purchased. Has anyone seen this? I'm guessing this was an aftermarket axle that someone slapped in at some point. Before I go replace it with the proper one, I want to know if this is the axle off an older model, which could indicate that someone replaced the inner driver with an older one on that side of the car. I've read that older drivers use smaller tripod bearings, but the bearing I took off the car is the same dimensions of the new one(bearings are 37mm). Any help would be appreciated.
