I suffered a broken shifter in my '92 900S about five years ago while maneuvering through an afternoon-commute intersection. Had to limp over to the side of an on-ramp and investigate with the stock toolkit from the trunk.
Some quick disassembly allowed me to sort the snapped mess out enough to drive home...I think in 3rd gear. Wasn't great but once home I swapped in the one from my '87 every other week when I rotated between the two cars.
I bought a spare off eBay and then asked a local welding shop what they could do with my broken version; they re-assembled the shifter with some beefy new welding and they maintained the original height. I was at least hoping they'd have to shorten slightly and I was ready to modify that reverse-lockout "wire" or "cable" to make it shorter if needed. But that never came to pass.
And they duplicated some of the strengthening weld-support in the same broken area on the new spare.
Only recently have I learned of Modern Classic Saab; their short-shifter would have been an excellent option at the time.
