We had a 1986 black Sedan with clear coat, but it is possible that it may have been repainted before we got it. I love the single stage paints because they can be buffed out (just be sure to specify a heavy coat at the paint shop. Properly buffed out and with today's ceramic coatings, a single stage paint looks great and is about as easy to care for as a clear coat. Single stage is also a lot easier to maintain and touch up.
That being said, I think more solid colors had clear coat in the post-1990 era. For instance, I am very sure the Talladega Red was a two stage paint.
I had my 1988 vert repainted in 2020 and specified the same single stage cherry red that was original - it looks great!
