I have to say the automatics are not as bad as their reputation. I have several because my wife can't drive a stick and even if she could, her and a Saab manual would not be a good combination. (I also have a couple of 5-speeds and shift like a granny).
I've had to replace two of the autos. One because it was leaking so badly (almost 200K). The other because the car wouldn't go any more (about 180K). I suspect the pump tangs.
Two biggest complaints with autos is that 1.) they can strand you without warnings. Yes, 5-speeds crap out too but unless you were driving like a wild man they usually give you ample warnings. And 2.) on the highway you really want another gear (or two).
But if it was a convertible that I was only driving on warm sunny days I would not be afraid of an automatic.
I do PM on the autos like crazy. Keep the auto trans fluid flushed. I remove the drain plug and let 4 or 5 quarts drain and refill And flush the transaxle/differential often (every 20K miles or so). Get the fill plug area super clean, drain and refill.
