I'm actually rebuilding a slave right now and I can tell from the wear on the center "tube" that it doesn't travel more than 7/16" from the top of it so you could probably safely take off about 1/4 - 5/16".
I think with a 1/4" of extra wiggle room you should be able to remove it fairly easily with the PP still in place.
I know I was able to remove the slave with the PP in place once on one of my cars but last time I did it I could not.
