I am extremely new to Saab ownership and I made a bit of a mistake. This 1990 900 Turbo Convertible came to me with a dead (and removed) fuel pump. The new one still didn't make any noise or pump any fuel so I went in to troubleshooting mode. I found a relay under the hood that said "pump relay" and figured it must be the fuel pump so I removed the relay and jumped the pins to try to run the fuel pump.
Right, so what I was actually jumping was the brake/ABS pump which explains why something in the engine compartment was making noise but the fuel pump wasn't. When I went to remove my probe from the relay socket, it had apparently gotten so hot it melted in to the plastic of the socket and took a little bit of work to remove.
The fuel pump was fixed - there was corrosion on the pins for the power connector on the top of the canister - but I noticed that when the battery was hooked up the "brake fluid" and (I think) the battery light on the gauge cluster were always on, but suuuuuuper dim. When I turned the key to start the car, the lights would come on full-brightness like they normally do and then go back out, but the "ABS" light is lit, I have no power brakes, and the pump does not make any noises. If I remove the brake pump relay, the gauge cluster is completely and fully dark when the key is turned off, like it should be. But as soon as the relay goes back in I get sort of a half-click from it and those cluster lights are just barely on. After a little while, the relay starts to get a bit warm, but not all the way to "hot".
I was going to give the relay a test and pull the ABS codes with the relay installed. I am assuming that everything was in working order before I jumped that relay, but I just bought it and it's apparently been sitting since 2015 or so.
My initial guess is that I fried the pump or melted a wire. Is there anything else that I should be looking at?
