As a *very* non professional I would do that too. Cmyles is the expert on all things transmission for the C900! The transmission is the end of the world for these cars.
My experience on a low miles C900 was that it was hard to get the inner clip off the tripod bearing. The outer with a screwdriver to open the clip up was not terrible, circlip pliers were not ideal. It took quite a bit of hammering with a wood block interposing to get the outer off.
The boots (with grease) are really cheap, so opening it up is the thing to do. Be careful to tape up or do something to hold the tripod bearings in place while you fool with it.
For "new" cars like my 2005 9-3SS I just swap the axle even for a torn boot - but keep the OEM at hand. Super easy compared to a C900.
