I guess this response is kinda late but I have done this myself. It's not really that hard, but it can require a bit of contortion work to get the old one out and the new one in. Probably helps to drain and remove some coolant hoses but I didn't. In my situation, swapping the VR didn't fix it and the bushings were worn out anyway (much quieter after replacing). What I didn't realize is that the alternator itself was probably fine. Mine wasn't charging because the crank pulley had partially separated but was making no sound! All the belts were moving but there was not enough tension or something and it wasn't charging. So, of course swapping the VR wouldn't help in that situation. My Saab specialist Indy gets the credit for figuring it out... I took it there after the car still wouldn't charge with a new alternator... He came to the conclusion that it was the alternator, maybe a bad rebuild I got, and swapped in another alternator... Same problem... So digging deeper, he found the crank pulley issue. They have done a lot of Saab crank pulleys and only a couple were inaudible like that...
I think the costing Jerseysaab came up with is probably pretty realistic.
