Problem solved: a washer fell into the wheel sensor housing. The sensor got a little damaged and the teeth on the axle got worn a bit. Not surprisingly the ABS light turned on. I'll replace the sensor, but I'm hoping that the ABS will work with the worn teeth on the axle.
Am I correct in thinking that the ABS sensor uses the teeth on the axle gear right below it to measure speed? Will the system work if the teeth are worn?
