900 thermostat heat issue sorted

In my 91 900 I replaced the thermostat and noted I had no heat. I removed all the hoses and metal pipe associated with the heater and flushed them out. I also replaced the heater valve and flushed out the heater core and still no heat. I noted the hoses to the heater valve were cold. I then read in the Haynes manual that the 900 needs a special 3 way thermostat. So I bought a genuine Saab one from my local shop (Scanwest in Seattle). I fitted it and immediately had tons of heat. The Saab tstat measures about 1.5 inches long and the faulty tstat is about 2 1/8” long. This extra length blocks the coolant feed to the heater core via the metal pipe that runs under the intake manifold. So always use the Saab tstat!!
Hooray I’ve got heat for the upcoming cold days!
