So I looked at the cable today. You are referring to the plastic piece which clips onto the speedometer. Did it just come out of the crimp or did it break? I suspect it broke off.
If that is the case I would try getting some shrink tubing on the cable with the plastic piece off, glue the plastic on with JB weld or similar. I would probably build it up around the break. Then shrink the tubing around the cable, glue and the plastic.
I bet that would be secure enough.
