Chain noise from rebuilt transmission only in neutral: normal? Posted by Blue Devil [Email] (#3630) [Profile/Gallery]

I've recently installed a manual transmission rebuilt by Eriksson in my '94 convertible, along with a new clutch kit and ancillaries (flywheel bearing, slave cylinder, throwout bearing); the only things that weren't new in the clutch area are the input shaft and the resurfaced flywheel. I've noticed that when I'm in neutral with the clutch engaged (pedal up), I still get what sounds like a chain rattle from the front of the car, and it goes away when I either push the clutch pedal in or have it in gear. I did put enough oil (10w40 conventional) into the transmission and chain case, and I confirmed with a mechanical stethoscope that the noise is coming from the chain area. Is a small amount of chain noise normal on the C900? Or is there something I could've installed incorrectly that is causing this?
