Follow-Up - Fuel/Temperature Gauge Progress - 1984 900 Posted by ForzaSaab [Email] |
Saab Community : Thank you for all of the recent ideas regarding erratic temperature gauge behavior in the recent March post. Here is the diagnostic summary.
- The engine is cooling properly, with normal 170°F to 185°F temperatures on the radiator and coolant hose surfaces - measured with a Fluke IR heat gun.
- The resistance of the coolant temperature sensor is correct at 55 to 70 Ohms, depending on engine temperature. So, the sensor is good.
- Temperature gauge has been tested, as follows. The gauge instantly pegs at maximum, when the sensor wire is shorted to ground, and the ignition is on. Therefore, the wiring is intact.
In the first 15 minutes of operation, the temperature gauge rises about 1/4 inch above full cold and stays there. It does not gradually rise to the normal horizontal position. Then the gauge consistently pegs at maximum after about 15 to 20 minutes of operation.
So, my hypothesis is that we are dealing with a bad gauge and a short of some type in the gauge.
To fix this, I was able to source a nearly new instrument panel on e-Bay. However, before the big job of installing the new panel, WHAT ELSE COULD BE WRONG OR SHOULD BE CHECKED ? That is, the last thing I want to find is, that the new panel / temperature gauge behaves the same.
Thanks very much,
ForzaSaab
