Particulars: '94 Convertible, 5-speed turbo.

Condition: Rather loud, intermittent, tapping coming from the valve train, seemingly.

Background: Had the head replaced last summer, discovered the head was bad doing the head gasket. Shortly after getting back on the road, I got a pretty loud, rather disturbing, tapping from the top of the motor/valve train. It was not present immediately after repair. Called my tech., described what was going on, he assured me the motor was not going to grenade, etc. I started it up again, ran loud for less than a minute, noise dissipated, did not come back for the next few months of driving. Car stored for the winter. Back on the road this spring, driven approx. 250 miles, no tapping. Yesterday, the tap dancers came back, progressive, pretty loud again, not a faint "I might hear something" type of noise. Let is sit over night, started this morning, loud taps still there, dissipated after less than a minute of running. Started again 3-4 hours later, no evidence of condition. Good times!

So, this seems to me, with my limited automotive expertise, like an oiling/lubrication issue?? Question(s): is this condition considered "normalish" for that motor? Seems like a passage might be blocked, limiting oil flow to the top of the motor, but it goes away? I don't know what's under the cover to make all that work. Could this be a sign of a failing oil pump?

SAAB friends, any and all ideas or suggestions are welcomed, outside of the ones pointing out my lack of knowledge! ;) Thanks all, happy SAABing.
