I have a 1992 Saab 900 Turbo Convertible with 156K miles that I typically only drive on the weekends around town at speeds under 45mph (40-50 miles every weekend) with a few short bursts up to 65-80mph on a 1.5 mile stretch of open road). Under these conditions there is no oil loss, and I am using Mobil-1 10W 30.I took it on the highway for 60 miles driving 75-85 mph most of the that distance and the next day when I checked the oil noticed I had lost 500-600mls. I checked the intercooler piping heading into the intake and there was not any pooled oil there, and the exhaust pipe was just normal carbon deposits no oily sludge and no obvious leakage anywhere else. Coolant was normal and the car was not overheating. On the drive back home a few days later I kept it under 65mph and < 3000 rpm on the highway and there was no oil loss. I assume that the turbo is burning the oil and am wondering if I should switch to a 15W50 oil or something heavier than 10W30 until I decide to rebuild the turbo (which seems to be working fine otherwise, car runs and idles perfectly).
