Are you in the US? If so, are you *sure* it's a 528i and not a 528e? The former is a *reasonably* sporting 180hp 5-series, the latter is a 127hp commuter-mobile especiale. '81 was the last year of the 2.8l "big six" in the US, replaced by the 533i (3.2l big six) and the 528e (2.7l small six) in '82.
My point is, the i is a neat, old BMW that will be expensive to maintain. The latter is a generic, ok-at-best BMW that will be expensive to maintain. I'd take the i in a heartbeat (I regret selling my '79 desperately!) but the e is, well, a generic car from the '80s. Also, if it is a real 528i, you may have smog & registration issues since it would have to be a grey market car... you probably wouldn't, but it's something to think about....
