90,000,000 miles seems a bit high - but the 88 was a good year. First year the turbo bearing was water cooled. The most important factor in determining the worth is service records. Turbo engines must have their oil changed at least every 4000 miles or synthetic oil used with regular filter changes. Coolant should be replaced every two years - ideally with SAAB or Mercedes-Benz coolant. If the maintenance book has been kept up with all work done by either a SAAB dealer or specialist, and all other service records for repairs and the like are in order, then consider if the car has any rust on it (look under the wheel wells and at the bottom edge of the doors) and the general condition of the interior and the paint - clearcoat especially of that vintage has a tendency to peel and a complete recoat is the only solution (expensive!). Check the dash for cracks (about 2/3 have cracks at that age) and headliner for sagging (similar odds). These last two items are not showstoppers but if defective give you some bargaining power. Finally,if the above is all good, take the car to an independent SAAB mechanic (if you can find one in your area) or dealer (but not the place doing this transmission work) for a pre-purchase inspection. If he gives it a clean bill of health, buy it. $3000 would be cheap. I personally would avoid an automatic transmission - they are nothing but trouble.
