Here is a long shot, but worth checking out. It may be corrosion between the copper strands of the battery cable and the terminal crimped to the end of the cable. Test both ends of each battery cable for elictrical continuity. I saw this only once, but was exactly what you describe. (Intermittent electrical system loss, won't start because that uses the most amperage, and would be consistant with a click when you move the cable). I used a test probe to check both terminals of the hot cable and then connected the probe to the hot terminal and tested the ground cable.
