I just recently had to replace the auto trans in my 89 900 turbo conv. I was getting the same story upwards of $2000 and 3 weeks to get a rebuilt unit from Errickson. I went looking at salvage yards. Found one in an 88 Aero with only 77K for $450. The thing to looke for, obviously, is low miles, since the typical auto trans only goes about 170K miles. When you find one that you think might work check the fluid, if it's brown, the tranny is toast, if it's reasonable red it's probably OK. Still it's a risk because the shop that does the switch won't guarantee the part so if it goes bad you're out $500-700 for the labor. I got lucky because the salvage yard managed to get out the engine but didn't want to try pulling the trans off so they sold me both engine and trans for $700. So my repair consisted of switching out engine and trans, lot's cheaper. It runs great, so far so good. My point is that you can find a good used trans that will do the trick but you're still gonna have to spend the $$ on the installation and there is some risk. For me it was worth saving $1,000 + .
