For fuel system, check fuse first, then the relay It is located above the LH control unit (Brain) behind the carpet kickpanel passenger side front. There are two relays the one closest to the door jamb is the fuelpump relay. The pump should run while the starter is cranking. Hard to hear when your in the driver seat, have someone crank or listen for you. The pump is in the tank under the floor in trunk. Easy to get to, just pull back on the floor panel and it will release from it's clips. (harder to put back correctly).
IF PUMP DOES NOT RUN, and the fuse is good, bypass the relay with a jumper between sockets 30 and 87b in the relay panel,(plug). The pump should run.
From here on it gets rather involved (you really need a book to get deeper into it). However if the pump is ok........
The other most obvious places to check are the hall effect transistor in the distributor and then the Igition module on the engine bay wall left front fender It's an aluminum heatsink with a black or gray plastic box on it and a Bosch connector (whole thing is about 1.5" x 2.5"). A rebuilt Distributor is the easiest way to go (+/-$280) and the Ign. Mod. is about $200. if needed. A junkyard can be a good place to scrounge up small gizmos like this. Just be sure that you stick to your year and model # until you get to know what parts are interchangable.
Is this your first Saab? if so, Bently publishes a fantastic book for either the 8 valve or 16 valve Saabs. Also you can get a Haynes but it's not as detailed , nor as expensive. Happy Saabing, C. Williams
