Going round in circles trying to fix this (long) Posted by Alanb [Email] (#722) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Alanb) on Sun, 15 Oct 2000 11:40:21 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Since replacing the radiator I’ve been trying to get rid of air bubbles in my coolant system for ages and haven’t succeeded. I’ve emptied the system 3 times now (by means of removing bottom hose - since the drain plug will not budge), filled up (with the heater matrix set to ‘hot’) and bled – but still no good. At idle I get lots of bubbles going into the reservoir and lots of bubbles from the bleed screw.
On a trip yesterday things got worse. I noticed steam coming from the exhaust and a lumpy idle. I checked the dipstick and sure enough there was water in the oil. This seems to indicate a head gasket leak. However, after releasing the cap on the coolant reservoir a massive amount of pressure was released and the idle returned to normal. I’ve driven the car 100 miles with the cap undone and there have been no problems and the idle is fine (apart from some coolant loss and bubbles continually appearing in the tank). I’ve tested the compression and all cylinders read close to 155psi.
What is going on? Do you think that it is my failure to bleed the system properly that is causing the temporary head gasket failure or a head gasket failure that is causing the bubbles in the reservoir?
Now that the head gasket has been breached once should I replace the gasket or not?
Thanks,
Alan.
