sounds like you have the Euro type or later aero assemblies with plastic lenses. The glass lenses tend to get spattered with gravel and get a little cloudy or diffracting, but not yellow. About the only solution is new lenses or preferably assemblies...since your lenses are yellowed, chances are the reflector isn't doing much good.
I've tried 100W bulbs in yellowed volvo 'TV screen' headlights and they don't do much better than stock.

My advice is just get new Canadian or Euro speck headlight assemblies...if you have the 4x6" or sealed beam units you're in the best shape because you can get new Hella or Cibie H-4 Euro units for about $50 each.
