The slip ring is harder than the brushes (doh) and you may have a scratch or something on the one that is wearing the one brush.
Of course it's not going to be easy to see, but I would first try to remove the regulator/brush holder assembly with the alternator in the car and stick my finger in there (engine off) and feel the slip ring. Turn the engine over (finger out) and try to examine the rest of the ring. If you find the rough spot it may be fixable with a bit of sandpaper (NOT any metallic stuff although 3M tri-m-ite works well and even better with a little water...wet the paper thoroughly) while the engine is idling...be careful with those fingers! Try a pencil with some 200 or better
tri-m-ite glued on the eraser.
If that doesn't work you may have to either live with the reduced brush life or remove the alternator and replace the rotor/slip ring or take the rotor/slip ring out and have it refinished. If you go that far you might as well have the bearings replaced too for $50 or so.
