Trim Adhesive, not just the Trim Adhesive.
Trollhattan in Baltimore MD sells a headliner kit with two spray cans of 3M Super Trim Adhesive and enough material for the headliner and the two side panels in the rear (my hatchback). If it's your first headliner I would recommend you ask for two extra cans of adhesive (ask me how I know this--NOT).
If you've read this before just ignore it but it bears repeating...the headliner frame/mount comes out the rear easily on hatchbacks, less so on four doors (remove front seats and try to take it out the front) watch out for the sunroof side areas, very weak. The mount can be repaired with fiberglass reinforced bondo very easily, or use fiberglass resin and some cloth (resin alone won't be strong enough). Trollhattan on the web.
One more tip...the adhesive spray smells pretty strong for a couple days, and doesn't really get hard for a couple days, even though it's touted to be contact cement and is applied as contact cement. If you want the new headliner to last for a long time (I think that putting it back in right side up in the car before the cement has fully cured can lead to problems several years down the road, as it were...) and don't like to get high from MEK, (where's the downside here?) after you apply the new headliner to the mounts/pieces, leave it upside down in the basement somewhere it won't get stepped on and the smell will go away in about a week.
