Bill,
I live on the Florida coast at sea-level, so take what I say with a grain of sea-salt.
When I put my AID in, I tried the timing at everywhere between 18 and 22 degrees BTDC. The SPG9 guys said the unit would allow 3 to 6 degrees of additional advance, so I did half a dozen experimental runs. Like you, I was able to get 4/5 redzone steady boost. I found that at certain timing settings I got less boost, slower onset of boost, or APC knock sensing causing boost twitch. For me 20 degrees proved to be the optimum setting, giving me highest and most stable boost.
My advice, for what it's worth, is that you go ahead and experiment with the timing. A single degree makes a noticeable difference! Take it up and down without too much worry, because the APC and knock sensors will protect the engine, as long as they're working properly. Let us know which setting works best for you up in the Rockies!
(And I'm jealous that you had so little trouble hooking up the AID pin in your distributor! I fished around for half an hour before I got it!)
